The main aim of this project will be to evaluate the immuno-efficiency of Nannochloropsis sp. and E. gracilis as functional aquafeed ingredients, to boost the health resilience and increase the survival rate of the fish (European seabass, Senegalese sole and Atlantic salmon), aiming to maximise their productivity as potential new commodities for aquaculture, while maximizing the microalgae capacity to produce the targeted bioactive compounds. The project will a) optimize cultivation and improve the functionality of microalgae biomass, b) understand and validate their effects on fish immune-stimulation, and c) formulate and validate the developed prototypes as products to enter the market. SPAROS will lead WP4 and will be responsible for functional feed formulation, testing the novel feeds in Senegalese sole post-larvae and coordinating the validation trials for the project’s species.

About EEA Grants:

Through the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are partners, in the internal market, of the Member States of the European Union. As a way of promoting a continuous and balanced strengthening of the economic and trade relations, the parties of the European Economic Area Agreement have established a Multiannual Financial Mechanism, known as the EEA Grants. The EEA Grants aim to reduce the economic and social disparities in the European Economic Area and strengthen the bilateral relations between beneficiary and donor countries. For the period 2014-2021, a total contribution of 2.8 thousand million euros has been agreed to 15 beneficiary countries. Portugal will benefit from an amount of 102.7 million euros.
