ITS-EEL aims at improving the production of European glass-eel for the aquaculture industry, based on the specifically designed culture systems and rearing protocols originating from the EEL-HATCH project (Eel hatchery technology for a sustainable aquaculture) developed at the eel breeding and hatchery facility established in Hirtshals, Denmark, constructed by the North Sea Science Park and co-financed by IFD. Building-up on the knowledge acquired through EEL-HATCH, ITS-EEL will further improve the egg and larval breeding protocols and optimize larval culture systems, water quality, and diets to succeed in the production of European eel-glass in captivity. The main aims of ITS-EEL are (i) the formulation and manufacture of feeds and hormone additives that ensure the production of high quality gametes and offspring of farmed European eel that reach metamorphosis and the glass eel stage; (ii) the improvement of assisted reproduction, rearing, recirculating water systems, and water quality assessment protocols that enhance offspring survival rate and longevity.
