Functional effects of tryptophan in fishmeal-free feeds

A recent study evaluated the functional effects of tryptophan in fishmeal-free aquafeeds for gilthead seabream, by complementing classical zootechnical performance indicators with proteomic and metabolic profiling information.

The results of this collaboration between SPAROS and the Center of Marine Sciences of Algarve (Faro, Portugal) showed that, though the supplementation of tryptophan in fishmeal-free aquafeeds for gilthead seabream did not induce an improvement in growth performance metrics, a clear effect on the hepatic proteome, characterized by a decrease in stress-related proteins and an increase in immune-related proteins, could be observed. This illustrates the usefulness of untargeted analysis methods for the evaluation of fish nutritional state and how it is affected by nutritional and functional additives.

This study was funded by Portugal and the European Union through FEDER, COMPETE 2020 and CRESC Algarve 2020, in the framework of Portugal 2020 (Project ALG-01-0247-FEDER-3520, ALISSA).
